CASE STUDY: Your Vote Counts Ohio: Ohio's Successful 2004 Election Campaign
Pierce Communications was Project Manager for the “Your Vote Counts Ohio” voter education campaign, a key part of Ohio Secretary of State Ken Blackwell’s plan to lead Ohio through the 2004 presidential election.  In this role, Pierce supervised, directed and assisted top flight professionals from Burson-Marsteller and Wilson-Grand Communications, as well as nearly a score of Ohio elections experts, media relations executives, printers and creative professionals.

Voter Education Campaign

Blackwell’s $2.5 million voter education campaign successfully informed Ohio’s 7 million voters how to exercise their voting rights correctly.  A key part of the effort was new media, using emails, internet banner advertising and a web site able to show residents of each of Ohio’s 88 counties specific video instructions on how to use their voting machines.  Traditional media such as newspaper inserts and television ads balanced the campaign, giving all voters clear instructions and setting a positive tone for the politically-supercharged election.  Intense, constant media relations work helped reinforce the credibility of the Secretary’s efforts to create the opportunity for all Ohioans to exercise their voting rights fairly, accurately and efficiently.

No Margin For Error

With no margin for error, the team worked feverishly in spite of more than 27 separate law suits filed by both political parties leading up to the election, and through election night, monitoring and adjusting strategies nonstop.
